980
If you want sli get two 970s

770sli<980<970sli

Some games don't like sli much and sli can be problematic. I would get the 980 but two 970s would be more powerful if you don't mind the odd bit of config and the odd game that has hiccups

^ 2x 970 is only a little bit more expensive then a single 980.

while i agree the single GPU solution is better, with the two choices though the 770's will be stronger. two 970s would be EVEN better. Most issues with SLI are all worked out.

SLI 970's might be fun. They produce a lot less heat than earlier cards. Seems like only yesterday people were doing SLI with GTX 480's. Anyway SLI is fun. I did it with my 570's a couple of years ago just for the experience. Very powerful but only had 1.5 gigs of VRAM. 4 gigs on the 970 should be ideal.

Just get a single EVGA GTX 980 SC http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NI5DA2E. It's pointless to SLI for your setup and a single card setup is a more desirable option 95% of the time and in your situation you're in that 95%.

If for some strange reason you need more horsepower then you can always SLI later but you should be fine for at least a couple years.

See... This is what people should be doing. Going from a 580 to a 980. Good move man. I see people just giving up on their 770's and 780's to get the 9xx series. For Christ sake... I bet you could get a 4gb GTX770 from some dumb bastard eager to sell on EBay for around 200 bucks. Nvidia is just having money thrown at them right now. I think moving from a 580 to a single 980 is a good choice. Then you can sli them later.
