Windows does not want my motherboard audio to work

I was adding RAM into my computer. After getting a bluescreen and realizing that my RAM was not placed properly (and fixing it), everything was fine, except for my audio, which was missing.

You see, Windows 8.1 says that no audio output device is installed. The speaker icon on my taskbar has a red circle with an x beside it. I tried reinstalling realtek drivers from the ASUS website and from my motherboard's disc, but that did not help. I also uninstalled and reinstalled them through device manager, but still had the problem. The realtek hd audio manager detects when I pull out a cable or plug one into an audio jack. I checked device manager and under sound, video and game controllers, windows shows both "amd high definition audio device" and "realtek high definition audio". They are both enabled and windows says that they are working properly. Also, the windows audio service is running.

I tried having windows troubleshoot my audio but it could not find any problems. I enabled everything that had to do with audio or realtek in my BIOS.

THE FUNNY THING IS, I have ubuntu on my USB flash drive. I ran it on my computer and could hear the bootup sound through my speakers (which were hooked up to my pc). I even booted it up a second time and heard the same sound. So my motherboard's sound device must be working properly.

Also, I did a malware scan with avast and could not find any problems. I tried looking through my motherboard manual but could not find anything to do with audio.

No audio can be played. I tried playing things such as VirtualDJ and Sony Vegas Pro 11, but could not hear anything.

Specs:
Asus M5A99FX Pro r2.0 Motherboard
AMD FX-8320 8 core 3.5ghz cpu
Asus AMD R9 270 cpu (2 gb gddr5 256-bit)
Thermaltake 600W PSU
10 GB of DDR3 RAM (two 4 GB sticks in the blue slots and a 2 GB stick in one of the black slots)
1 TB Seagate HDD
Asus DVD Drive
Bose Companion 2 speakers
Ultra x1 case

All help is appreciated. I hope that I did not forget to write anything about my problem.
