Someone told me I need to put a pipe adhesive like whiteys pipe compound on my barb threads. I'm building a new water cooling loop so I thought I'd ask if anyone has heard of this? Is this a good idea for extra sealing?

Not at all necessary and possibly a really bad idea cause that more or less permanently affixes them to the component and that means you can't change your mind later. I've actually rearranged my loop a few times and swapped out different angled fittings and I've never had a leak from a barb. You really just need to make sure they're good and tight. I typically do hand tight and then a quarter turn with a wrench or pliers to make sure it's in good and have had no issues.

You really don't want to use teflon tape or pipe thread compound if you absolutely don't have to. Most G1/4 fittings use O-rings to seal when installed so this should provide any seal that you need. Worst case scenario, some of this comes off inside your loop and ends up lodging in your pump impeller.
