Greetings,

I'm looking to buy a SATA controller card.

After doing some research I came across this card:
http://www.sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1104

Went to NewEgg to read some reviews and found this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124045

Cons: - Slows Video Card when using multiple PCIE 2.0 slots

Other Thoughts: **NOTE: my motherboard has only 2 PCIE 2.0 slots and when both are populated they run in x8/x8 mode instead of x16, which means my video card will run slower..

AMD Phenom IIX4 940 OC 3.6
GA-MA790X-UD4P
Radeon HD 7790 1GB
8GB DDR2 805

Here is my question: Does it even make sense that his video card would slow down because of this SATA card? If so, what is the reason for this and how can I find out if I end up with the same problem should I decide to buy it ?

Thank you for your time.

First, you would not be slowed down by running in x8 mode with PCIe version 2 with an HD7790. I'm not even sure the best video card would be slowed down in gaming, or if it was it would be minor.

Secondly, there's no reason to think any addon PCIe card would have an impact on the video card.

*Long story short, it's a non-issue.

Other:
a) Why are you worried about using the 2nd slot when you already have a x1 slot at the top you can use?

b) I assume the 6gpbs addon card is to get optimal bandwidth due to your max current 3gpbs but I see little point to that since your WINDOWS drive wouldn't boot from that AFAIK. There's little point in having a 6gbps connector for only a secondary drive.

It's only useful for SSD and even if it was for the main drive frankly most people wouldn't notice the difference between an SSD at 550MB/second read/write and one at half the speed. Again though, it appears to be a non-issue since I don't think you can boot the main drive with it.

there are boards with a configuration where if you use a certain pci-e slot will cause a 16x to run at 8x or something similar.

best is to check the manual, it is there.
however, as mentioned above, you don't have a high end card, so an x8 should be enough. if this was a high end gpu, maybe (sorry i dont have the numbers) an x8 in an PCI-E 2.0 may slow it down somehow

*They couldn't even slow down a TITAN running at PCIe v2.0 in x8 mode!!

"...if your motherboard or video card only supports PCI-E 2.0 our results show that this really is not a problem. At the same time, if you want to install a sound card into your Z87 system but doing so would limit your video card to x8 speeds, that is also not a very big problem.."

I just found a similar post here and apparently it can happen.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2217353/2nd-pcie-x16-pcie-slow-graphics-card.html

It will depend on what motherboard you have and how the pci-e lanes are split up.
If the board/cpu supports x16/x16 (or x16/x8) then it wont effect the first x16 slot, if it only supports x8/x8 then it will more then likely drop the first pci-e slot down to x8 simply because the second slot is populated.

Don't forget that Haswell uses PCIe version 3 which has 2x the bandwidth per lane as version 2. Again though, it's really a non-issue for him.

This person did not qualify his comments. I have used these pcie usb cards and if the do slow anything down you and I cannot see it. Do not worry Pcie 3.0 16x is the same as 3.0 8x, is in basic the same as Pcie 2.0 16x,
and I believe 2.0 8x is the same to the human eye. There may be a difference in benchmarks but that is about it.

NOT A PROBLEM...

rcc,
Please don't confuse the guy. I've provided a comprehensive article that shows not even a Titan would saturate the bandwidth for his PCIe bus. The guy in the link that said a TV tuner would slow things down slightly (in terms of PCIe bandwidth) is dead wrong.

I dont know what your reading but the OP has a Phenom II x4 940 which puts him right back to what I said; not that I didn't agree that it was a non-issue to begin with.

As for the intel shortage of lanes and possibly dropping to x8 x8 mode, that only happens when the users uses the second x16 or x8 slot. those are the ones typically tied to the cpu's pcie lanes. The x1 slots usually stem from the southbridge. But really its all determined by the motherbds designers and usually documented in the owners manual.
