System behaves as if new SSD has internal fault; system powers down before POST when newly installed SATA6 SSD connected.

Trying to install a new SSD to eventually function as a system drive. Drive is newly purchased from Amazon. When connecting to an empty SATA6 port, and when powered up with a proper SATA power cable (direct to PSU on open 12V rail), system will not power up at all. Sometimes, after power-cycling the power supply, I'll get a brief blip of power, no more than 100ms long.

I narrowed down the problem to only occurring when the SSD is powered on and plugged in to SATA6. Either condition alone will not trigger problem (i.e. drive can exist on power cable while not attached to SATA6 without triggering problem).

I tried multiple SATA6 and SATA power cables. I also checked around the chassis for other wires that might be nicked and causing fault inside the PSU. System behaves totally normal when SSD is disconnected.

Seems like there is some internal fault between power and data connections in SSD. But, before requesting return for a defective drive, I'm wondering if y'all can think of a few other troubleshooting steps.

SATA 2 and 3 (6Gbps) ports are all working for existing drive. They are configured in IDE mode and system boots as expected without bad SSD installed. I have tried different SATA ports to rule out socket problems.

Couldn't tell ya. There's a new development:

I got a replacement SSD and installed it with a new cable.

Upon turning on the machine, the SATA cable (not the power cable, literally the SATA cable) caught fire near the SSD. I pulled the cable and powered down immediately.

After that event, can't get anything to boot. Figure that the problem was with the SATA controller on the mobo, perhaps all along.

My BIOS still 'sees' the HDDs, but won't boot.

I guess the right thing to do is buy a new mobo, right guys? The other HDD's should be safe, PSU probably is fine (or would you replace that as well?).

It'll crash if you change from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS. AHCI needs SATA drivers.

And SATA drivers dont install when its in IDE mode (even if you install Win7 or 8)

If you want AHCI you have to put it on AHCI before you install windows. Not after

If it was something like a Intel 530 these had probs, with its firmware. Some people reported that it disappeared all the time. Usually after a reboot

Unfortunately, USB keyboard seems unresponsive, so I can't even get to BIOS to try the IDE/AHCI switch.

I'd say it's clear that the MOBO SATA controller, as well as other components, seem to be fried.

I have RMA'd my SSD and PSU (under warranty), and bought a replacement MOBO (ASUS P8Z77-V LK Intel Z77).
