You got a spark as you brought the power connector up to the port.
You wrote sparks not spark so which is it.
Yes if it was a single spark it could be static, were you sitting on a rug on the floor? Or walking on a rug just before you plugged in the cord?
Was the laptop on when you did this? You say not even charged, but all laptops come with some charge and should at least power on.
Does this happen every time you bring the cord close to the port?
Are you always this timid around electronics? Maybe you should get someone else to get things started.
Took protective layer out and placed closed laptop on wooden tv stand. The stand, yes, was on carpet. And yes, I walked on carpet. Took plastic off adapter and sparked when touched to port. Heard crackles and looked like keyboard lit as saw light inbetween.
Did not happen again, but wonder about static and motherboard and or fire hazard. Should I keep it or trade right now?
