Hey. I have an asrock 775dual-vsta mainboard. On asrock website it says that it supports fsb up to 1066 and there's a supported cpus list that goes up to core 2 duo xtreme x6800. Wouldn't newer cpus with the same fsb (1066) and the same sockel work just fine? Like core 2 duo e7600 or the core 2 quad xtreme qx6800?

It probably would. You need to check the TDP on the CPU and make sure that it is within the design limits of the motherboard. Only the tested CPUs will be listed as compatible. And sometimes newer CPUs that were produced after the motherboard was manufactured may not be listed even though they will work perfectly fine.

Ans one other aspect to consider is the PSU. Your existing PSU must have the capability to power the new CPU. In most cases this will be fine except when overclocking is involved.

If the socket is compatible and the TDP is equal or less, I would try the new CPU.

Memory not appearing on the Qualified Vendor's List, I can understand as there are literally thousands of memory modules to test. No manufacturer is going to test them all. CPUs on the other hand, they would test and the fact that no Wolfsdale (Core2Duo E7600) or Kentsfield (Core2Quad QX8600) processors appear on the CPU Support List for your motherboard tells me that they are not compatible.

If you can pick up either of these on the cheap just to verify, by all means prove me wrong, but I wouldn't spend more than $10 just to find out it didn't work.

Heym thanks. So according to cpu-upgrade.com the mainboard supports 30-130watt cpus. The qx6800 is a 130watt one. So it should work even though it is quad core and the mainboard was designed only for processors with 2 cores?
Edit:
To the guy above: isn't it more possible that they just stopped the support for the mainboard and thus stopped tedting new cpus?

A call to Asrock tech support will confirm. Same with tech support from MicroCenter (free), and other places such as Best Buy, Fry's.

I'd say possible, but unlikely. Motherboard manufacturers are usually pretty good about maintaining the CPU Support Lists. I mean look at all of the core architectures they did test, Conroe, Presler. Smithfield, and Cedar Mill. Why stop with Wolfsdale and Kentsfield? It could also be that the Wolfsdale and Kentsfield processors were not compatible with the PT880 Northbridge Chipset.

Asrock tech support should be in a position to confirm. If I have the new CPU in my hand I would try it. If not, a call to Asrock would be prudent.

Agreed. A phone call would be prudent.
