I want to get an i7-4790k and an Asus H81M-E motherboard. I read online that Asus supports Overclocking with the 4790k with all 8 series boards. My question is if i have to run a BIOS update for the cpu to work

Get a Z97 mobo. Or get a G3258 pentium to use.

You dont want to overclock a 4790k with that motherboard, its fine for a g3258 but nothing more, get at least something like this:

Ok forget overclocking for now, just for the speed of the processor at stock, will the motherboard be compatible?

It will work. But not well. The mobo is made for low end cpus. The mobo and cpu should match. Good cpu, good mobo. crap cpu, crap mobo.

If you dont want to overclock, save yourself a few bucks and get a locked cpu.

could something like this work as a temporary board for a 4790k? all stock... which would later be replaced by something really nice and this one given to a small i3 build as a home/office pc...

Its not "made for low end CPUS", it will work just fine, it just wont overclock it very well (if it all).

That said, it will probably need a bios update to use devils canyon CPUs.
