Hey!

I've got two Asus Radeon HD 7970 over from my personal desktop computer.
We have two Dell Optiplex 980 (Early 2010) at the family business, today consisting of the dual Radeon HD 4550

On Dell's website, with the service tag, you can see almost all components thats sits in the machine, but not which power supply or motherboard. Other interesting components are:
Intel Core i7-870 2.93 GHz (1st gen?)
8 GB RAM 1333 MHz

So my question is whether it is possible to replace these with a 7970 card?
Will the card fit? Sufficient power supply? If it works, will it benefit or will the other components bottleneck?

I'm guessing it won't fit. You need to measure from the back of your case to the HDD bay. If it's shorter than 12 inches, it will not fit. The smallest 7970 I know of is 11.5 inches.

The power supply is going to be a cheap generic unit that will need to be replaced as well. That power supply is meant for a low powered office computer, not a gaming rig. I recommend at least a 550w PSU of good quality. This EVGA unit is on special for a real good price. It is overkill, but will suffice for future upgrades as well. http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=97306&promoid=1343
