Hi guys,

I recently replaced my processor with an AMD 9590. I have problems with my PC locking up 20 minutes or so into a graphics intensive game. My tower gets fairly hot but when I check temperatures nothing is over 70c.
I started to wonder if it was my PSU which is only 600w. AMD recommends a 1000w PSU for that processor. I did a PSU stress test and got to about 3 and a half minutes until the PC shut down. Couldn't feel any heat coming from the tower and again the temperatures weren't over 70c.

System info:

Motherboard: GA-990FXA-UD3 rev 1.2
CPU: AMD FX 9590 8-Core 4.0Ghz (originally 4.7ghz but motherboard underclocks)
GPU: GeForce GTX 660 Ti
RAM: 12GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
PSU: 600W

Does anyone know if it's likely to be a heat problem or a PSU problem?

Here's a screenshot of temps https://i.imgur.com/zMJR8sD.jpg

All help appreciated.

That motherboard may not be certified for that CPU. It will depend on what revision of that board you have. V4 is certified. That CPU is a VERY high wattage CPU. The voltage regulators on that board are probably overheating.

Could be either however you are using one of the most power hungry cpus available and you are using a very underpowered psu. If amd recommends 1000 watts you need to use a 1000 watt psu, There is a reason that it is recommended.

Pcpartpicker says the ud3 is compatible with the 9590 though, i wonder if that is wrong?

Depends on the version. I went to Gigabyte's page and the V1 page I went to first was not certified. I then saw that there were multiple revisions. That is why I updated my post to say MAY not be certified. I just double checked Gigabyte's page -- ONLY version 4 is certified, even version 3 stops with the 8xxx series. Check the revision you have....

And just because it is certified does not mean that it is not overheating the VRM, the chip still draws a load of juice and depending on what your airflow and cpu cooler is like the vrm might not be getting alot of cooling

VERY true. Even with water cooling for the CPU, you are still going to need significant airflow to keep the VRM area cool.

The one thing that bothers me about the OPs system info is the description of the FX 9590 -- It is not a 4.0 Ghz CPU. According to AMD's website it is a 4.7Ghz CPU. I wonder if the OP has the part number wrong or the description wrong .... We could be completely off base if the OP is talking about a different CPU ...

I have revision 1.2 which does support the processor. It's meant to be 4.7ghz but it underclocks to 4.0

The reason I said 4.0 is because the motherboard underclocks the CPU to that frequency as it only partially supports the processor.

According to this page the version 1.2 DOES NOT support the FX 9590. I don't know what page you were looking at but your board, according to the manufacturer doesn't support the CPU.

So basically you are using the processor with a board and psu that do not support it. I think that there is the root of your issues
