Hi folks,

I have an i7-860 (Lynnfield) o/c'd to 3.8ghz with hyper-threading,stable.

(1) What kind of a performance increase would I notice by going to the i7-4790k?

(2) Or, given that we're on the threshold of, 6/8 core Intel processors, should I just stay put for now, until they become affordable to the masses. How much of an improvement is DDR4 over DDR3?

I use the computer for gaming (Gigabyte R9-280x oc) @ 1920x1080p as well as video compression (i.e. Handbrake, Bd rebuilder).

The 4790k won't even work in your system. It's an LGA 1150 cpu while yours is an LGA 1156. I'd save up and wait for Broadwell to arrive and replace both the motherboard and the cpu at that time.

On the video work you do, you should see quite an improvement in performance. DDR4 vs DDR3, I have yet to see a comparison, but I doubt it would be much. Now, for your video work, a 6-8 core cpu would be beneficial. Gaming, not so much, unless you are recording your gaming.

Ok, well I'm getting the impression my i7-860 is still satisfactory.
Yes, I realize it's a new motherboard requirement.

I think it makes most sense then to wait until a 6/8 core intel cpu is more within my budget and then feel that I'm doing a worthwhile upgrade.
I'm reasonably satisfied with the video compression time with the i7-860, since I just let it run overnight while I sleep so it's not a big deal.

In terms of games - I suppose 3.8ghz quad core is fine for awhile yet.
