I want to upgrade to a SSD and would like to know the easiest way or if it's possible to transfer windows 8.1 64 bit operating system to the new SSD. I have 2 bays for the extra drive. Also the operating system is on a 1 terabyte 5400 rpm spindle drive which came with the system. I'm trying to make it boot up faster and use the other 1 terabyte drive for backups. Thanks in advance

You can't backup Windows while in Windows !!!!!! You can backup files but not system files as some are opened when Windows is running. So you need cloning software that boots up into the cloning software and not Windows. I did this with my older system. Its an Acer AS8950G which came with 2 HD bays. I did this when the system was new I installed the app i wanted. I had purchased a SSD with a Kit. A kit is a external USB hard drive case and Cloning Software (Acronis True Image). So I placed the SSD in the external drive and connected it. I stuck the Acronis DVD in the drive and booted into the Acronis menu. I then set a source drive and a target. The drive finishe and I moved the HD to the 2nd bay and played the SSD into the 1st bay and the system booted at least twice as fast.

No one thing make sure you have a SSD big enough to copy the whole drive. It won't work if the HD has 200 gb of data and your trying to clone it to a 128 gb SSD.

Actally I used this process 3 times

1. I cloned my HD when it was new with my favorite apps it was 750 gb hd with about 75 gb of data on it. I cloned it to a 120 gb SSD. \
2. I then purchased a 240 GB SSD and cloned the 120 GB SSD which was 85% full.
3. Then I cloned the 750 HD to a 1 TB HD. I had to tell Acronis to make use the full 1tb drive (in other words clone the 750 gb and extend the partitian on the new HD.

Yes as it says personal files (pictures, videos, docs and music). Here's an application that does a backup of the OS. As you see they download the software and reboot into the software. Because when windows opens it opens system files and those file can't be backed up while they are open. So you reboot and run the software that loads instead of Windows. Because Windows isn't running you can back up the OS.

I work in the software application field and it's just like you can't back up a database if users are logged in.

YOU NEED ALL FILES CLOSED WHEN DOING A OS BACKUP. Personal files aren't opened when Windows boots.

A backup is backing up of file. Cloning is doing an entire disk. The ONLY way to back up personal files and system files is to launch an app before Windows loads.
