Building My First Rig, Need Advice!

Hey! So, I've never build a computer before and I think its about time that I did. Surprisingly, my old 2009 iMac just doesn't cut it as a gaming rig. I've gotten some good help selecting parts, but I'll need some advice with some specific things.

I guess first, my goal for this rig. I want to be able to run CryEngine games on their highest settings. Evolve is coming out next year, and its the one next gen game I'm really hyped over, and am trying to preemptively future-proof my rig accordingly. My overall budget will be around $2000, and hopefully not too much past that. I'm waiting for sales and Cyber-Monday to jump on any parts, which is why I want to select as many as I can now so I can just click and buy them the second their prices go down.

The possible problems start with my GPU choice. I've selected the Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X, one of the most powerful, and largest, cards on the market, from what I've been able to tell. Not a problem by itself. The hitch is that I've only got 17" of clearance for the rig's case. In truth, there is about 22" of space down there in total, but the keyboard shelf that slides in and out of my desk reduces that maximum height. Fortunately, the keyboard shelf doesn't block anything once its out and being used, so the rig would have the full 22" of height for the top exhaust, leaving plenty of breathing room for it. The trouble is finding a good case that is short, but can also hold such a huge card.

I do understand that asking for a smaller case and a larger card is already asking a lot, especially to be able to cram that much power into a smaller system, but I'm hoping that I can find a mid-tower or something that can scrape by the dimension requirements. I've been eyeing the Corsair Carbide Series 200r, as well as some mini-towers, but I'd be afraid of doing anything less than a mid-tower because of cooling. I'm not sure even the Vapor-X will pick up the slack then.

I could sit here all day bringing things up, but I've got some errands to run soon and for now will leave my question at this: Is it possible for me to get as powerful as a rig as I want, with that specific GPU, in a smaller case safely? I don't want to straddle the line between it working and my system frying because of overheating, I want to ensure that whatever I do, the rig is efficient and runs as cool and quietly as possible. I'm asking a lot of my hypothetical rig and want to shoot down any major hopes now rather than later so I know where I stand. Thanks for any advice that can be offered!

Solution
Don't get an r9 290, wait for the 980(nvidia) A mid tower would be fine. The 980 rivals the 780ti, with a $300 dollar lower price tag.

Thanks for the help! I had trouble selecting a single "best" answer, all of your replies helped a lot! I'm now well on my way to finishing my hypothetical build.

I only need to finalize my motherboard choice (current one is a placeholder) and decide whether or not to add an SSD into my storage. Either way, my big decisions as far as a case and card have been resolved, and those were my main issues due to my space situation, so thanks a bunch!
