6 Month Old GPU's Now Obsolete?

6 months ago I bought a second Gigabyte GTX770 Windforce 3x 4gb card to run SLI with my new 1080p monitors (3 of them). Now I just read that they have been discontinued for the new line of 900 series cards. Did I make a huge mistake or will the 770 still be viable for a couple years?

That will happen all the time. Newer computer components come out all of the time...and each year they are improved on in performance, price, tech, etc. Coming from the console world takes some getting used to for sure. Consoles are already low to mid range PCs when they come out (especially this newest...

700 series are still viable for the next few years yes.

Think about it this way, people still use 500 series right now...so the 700 series will be working when the 10,000 series or whatever comes out.

I have a question to that statement, judging by the specs of the new 900 series, they're still slower then the 780/780ti right? I mean if I remember correctly, they have smaller texture size or something like that. And the price is cheaper as well, so wouldn't that make 700s better? I get that it's maxwell GPUs and those are more power per core, but still it's weaker no?

Oh thank god! I moved from console to PC last year and built my first rig. I dumped about 1500 into it cuz I was spending that much on replacing or refurbishing xbox's anyway. Got really impressed with the way my machine was just destroying games (in a good way) and then read this morning that my GPU's were moth balled for the 9xx series. Thought for a second that I had made a poor buying decision.

Check the reviews and benchmarks. 980 beats ti. 970 beats 780.

People love to make jokes and some seriously believe that PCs need to be upgraded every year...but that is just not true. Sure the 770 won't max out games at 1080p 60 fps in several years...as each year passes, depending on the game you would need to turn down the settings a bit to keep the same fps...but even if you have to turn the settings down to medium to keep 60 fps in 3-4 years...that is still just as good as or better than consoles performance. And a good GPU will last just as long as consoles for playing games...just turning down specific settings that PCs only get, such as the amount of AA and tons of other options will allow you to maintain good graphics and fps in most games.

Yeah they're weaker, just like the 700 was much weaker than the 600 and 500 series. The cards were soo much faster 10 years ago, those good old times.. :p

Ok now without sarcasm - the 970 fits somewhere between the 780 and 780Ti in performance (so it's good value for its price), and the 980 beats them all. 900 series has a different architecture (named Maxwell) so the specs don't say the whole story. Another main focus of the Maxwell cards is power consumption, so they're faster while drawing less power as well.

Exactly...just do what works for you. Thats my attitude too.

Yeah. It wouldn't make sense considering the games I have been playing lately barely go over 50% gpu usage. (Except for crysis 3 both GPU's are at 100% to give 60-100 fps on ultra). Pc's are definitely addictive. So many mods and tweaks you can do to boost performance. Consoles are pretty stagnant. I dont regret making the change at all. The graphics you can achieve with PC's is unparalleled in gaming.

I use a Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB with a 1920x1200 monitor. It can max all my games at that resolution and doesn't use any more power than a new GTX 970. While it would have been nice to get a more powerful card for less, I know this one will be fine for several more years.
