Put the card in the MoBo and test for yourself, you'll know what's better.

What is the purpose? You'll not need a better one until you have like $500 headsets or you're an extreme audiophile. They're both great audio cards, you don't need a new one. Yes they're pretty much similar.

90% of the audio quality difference on the PC is depending on the end driver a.k.a. loudspeakers or headphone.
The sound card only effect the 10% and not everyone can tell the difference.
Not only the sound card and the end driver, the source is also important. Is it a flac, mp3, etc.
Personally, I would not invest more money than the on-board sound card and invest more on the end driver.

BTW.
I can recommend AudioTechnica ATH-M50, V-Moda M100 and Bose QC15, (I own those) if you want to buy good headphones.

Sure, the MoBo's sound card is more than fine for those headsets :)
