So how long do the different PC components usually last? Is it necessary to change every component at one point? I know that it's necessary to upgrade the GPU and CPU at one point, but what about the other parts like the case, motherboard and monitor?
How long can I expect a PC to last with the same parts without upgrading?

Depends on what parts you have.
For example,an i5 4690K can last for 3-4 or even 5 years, while an Intel Pentium G3258 will last for 2 years.

The more you spend initially, the longer the parts will last without becoming obsolete. My friend has an 8 year old system that was practically a supercomputer when it came out. He upgraded the gpu once and it performs on par with consoles. He is due for a second gpu upgrade however

Cases last until you get tired of looking at them usually. Mechanical hard disks have a limited lifespan. But that lifespan varies depending on how much they are powered on (total hours) and how often they are powered on/off. 5 years is a conservative lifespan for a hard drive. Motherboards are tied to generations of CPUs usually. They last until the performance of the CPU is too low and a better replacement is not available. Again 5 years is conservative. Gamers go through upgrades of CPU much more frequently.

What you are using a PC for dictates how long it is useful. Meemaw doing web searches for quilting patterns will have a much longer usability of a PC than a gamer.

i do this a gpu every two years and cpu every 3rd year or there abouts preferably just when they release something new like 4k but dont buy straight away let prices fall to affordable levels. this way you stay just under the top. dont go rush out and by ddr4

Gaming. I wouldn't care much if I didn't want to play games. Last until you get tired of them? The same thing apply to montiors right? You don't necessarily have to get a new one (unless your case don't fit with the parts you want, and you want a monitor with different size and resolution).
But what about GPUs? Does a GPUs lifespan depend on what settings and resolution you are playing them on?

GPUs last until the performance is too low. If you can cut back on the eye-candy or resolution you can squeeze a little more life. But generally they are limited to how slow you can tolerate your display updating. Again, web surfing a graphics card could last almost indefinitely.
