Hardcore Android user looking into IPhones?

Hi everyone!

I am a dedicated Android user and have been enjoying the Android experience since Cupcake. I've never once thought about owning an Apple product for reasons which I won't bore you with here.

I saw plastered all over the web that the new Apple Iphone had been announced, and just to sate my need to know about the latest and greatest, I looked into it. Realising that there were not one, but two new iterations I was somewhat intrigued, especially seeing as not only has the size dramatically changed (Well, on the Plus at least) but also the shape. This was of great interest to me personally as I have always said that Apple needed to change their looks. Let's face it, the Iphone 4 came out and we were stuck with the same design for 5 god damn Iphone models. Literally the same design. A change of colour here, a change in size there maybe, but nothing changed!!!

Anyways, before I start rambling on about my peeves with Apple devices/owners I would like as many people as possible to answer the questions below in as un-biased a manner as possible. I am looking for some real, down to earth, mature answers from you guys (And I know it can be achieved) and I don't want this thread to turn into another 'Android vs. Apple' who can shout the loudest contest. =P

My questions are as follows:

1. As an avid Android user, how easy would I find it to make the switch between Android and IOS? Please include things such as media transfer, contacts, overall UI usage, etc.

2. Would owning an IPhone be a refreshing change to the daily hum-drum use of Android?

3. As I have invested a healthy amount of money into Apps, Movies and Music, is there any way to get the equivalent items on IOS without having to buy them a second time? (I know this ones a long shot, what with the two completely different companies and OS's and all, but I just thought I'd ask the question anyway).

4. In your own personal opinion, would it be worth someone such as myself purchasing an Iphone? Taking price out of the equation of course.

If there is anyone out there who has made the switch from Android to IOS I would love to hear what you have to say about the specific advantages and disadvantages about IOS compared to Android. =)

As always, thanks to anyone who replies!

Personally I find I phones overpriced and highly restrictive to even transfer your movies and music you will need iTunes on your PC just to put them on. Overall android is a lot better I think if you want a change you should try a custom ROM or a custom ui for android

I've been an Android user since the first Galaxy came out, then when the iPad Air was launched my in laws bought my gf and I one each as gifts.

Not gonna lie, I hated it at first... It sat there for at least a couple of months till I could get over some of the frustrations it causes an Android user. These days I use it a bit more like when Im watching TV and etc and have learned that there things I just can't or simply don't want to do on it 'cause it will frustrate me, so I avoid them.

Btw, I wrote all this on the iPad

Ok first I have never used an apple product so I am going to go on what I have seen and heard from other people

1 - I think as an android user, it shouldn't take too long before you get used to ios as it is much simpler than android. The only differences I have noticed is that you can respond to notifications on the lock screen, call recently called people on the home screen without going to the dialer or specific app. The main difference is touch id which is implemented very well. Also their syncronisation is very good. This is good if you have a mac. Also with ios 8 their continuity is supposed to make it easier to use any app on any device as it will just continue onto one device to another

2. This depends on you. I have heard that ios is very easy to get used to in routine

3. I don't think you can transfer the contents from one os to another but I could be wrond

4. I would say give it a shot and see if you like it. If your unsure talk to people at a store and see if they will allow you to try it out and if its good then buy it. Otherwise return it.

The main advantage I have heard from most people is that:
1) Apps are a lot more stable in ios than android
2) It is much simpler (ios)
3) Since it is simpler there is less customization which is both a good and bad thing. Good as each person can personalise their phone to their taste. Bad as it will slow the phone in due time.

Hi everyone! Thanks for your input, most appreciated!

@ firo40 - I'm not concentrating too hard on price at the minute to be honest, so I'm kinda leaving that variable out of the equation. As far as restrictions go, that's probably the main thing I'm worried about because obviously Android is very non-restrictive compared to IOS. I have heard that you can get Google Music on IOS, which would be great as I keep all my music on it, and I would assume that you could get things such as Dropbox to store movies on? I would have to look into this a little further.

I've tried custom ROM's before, Cyanogen, Paranoid, Slim bean, I just feel like I need a change. =)

@ educalifa - It's interesting to read your comment, as yours is a similar situation to mine. The only difference being if I were to go ahead and purchase an IPhone it would be a commitment as I use my phone far more than my tablet. =/ But from what I can gather from your comment it wouldn't exactly be a completely bad decision to get one?

Thanks for the warning about no back button! I never realised this? I take it there are just on screen 'back' buttons instead, a little like the forward and back browser buttons on Google Chrome or Internet Explorer?

@ velo3100 - Thanks for your input!

As far as simplicity goes to be perfectly honest while adjusting the look and feel of my Android experience to my tastes is a must for every new device, it's a short lived fad more than anything. I soon end up just using the basic functions anyway. =/ So perhaps the simplicity of IOS would be a refreshing change?

App stability is a big thumbs up for me. Despite my reservations for IOS and Apple in general I still cant help but stare in awe at their impressive software skills. However with such a limited number of hardware options compared to Android there is a certain logic to this. =)

I think I will take your advice and go to a store and try one out. =)

Yes, they have on screen back button... but there's a catch, every app put it on a different spot so it's never as natural/mechanical/intuitive as always pressing the bottom right corner of your phone. They're also not always obvious or immediately visible either. I have no idea why Apple won't include a back button but I reckon the day they cave their products will instantly become 40% better.

Also, I only have a few apps on the iPad but I'd say 'don't get too excited' when it comes to app stability either. My chrome crashes A LOT more on the iPad than on the phone even though I use it a lot less... then again, I'm sure Apple expects you to use Safari so they're not too concerned.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely take it into consideration. =)

Yeah, the addition of a dedicated back button in a standard place is probably one of the best things Android has to offer over IOS by the sounds of it. Such a simple little feature making such a huge impact. =/

It's a shame to hear about Chrome, I personally love it and use it on my phone, tablet and PC. One can only hope that a future update improves stability?

I'm still here and there as to whether to invest in an Iphone or not. If I was to get one it would be the Iphone 6 Plus. But as there's currently a 3-4 week waiting list I think I'll wait a little while and do my research and make a decision a month from now. =)
