This will be my main drive so it can't be like a WD Green. IT has to be performance based (ie for the occasional gaming, as a media serverO) but at the same time I need the additional space.

So which of the two drives would be quicker performance based? I also like the black because after 5 years it is still reliable. So I would also consider that factor

Part of the confusion I see between the seek times is that both of them are not in MS, one of htem is written in the MB/s

Hello,

The only worthy upgrade from a WD Black will be an SSD; go for an HDD only for storage, even if it's an SSHD (the writing speed is the same, they are a little bit speedier when reading).

What i don't get is...ok i use the OS, Office and browsing off the SSD (let's say 512mb). How about my 100gb of video games? Would they run off of a green/black with almost no difference in performance? Would they be cached to the SSD when I am playing games? How about if I use utorrent. Wouldn't it take time to move the files from where I installed utorrent (SSD) to one of the Sata drives?

It doesn't seem 'economic' to me on a few levels

For 100GB worth of games, an 250-256GB SSD will be plenty. If you cannot afford one, go with an 120-128GB one and install the games on the HDD. We were not talking about a WD Green, but a WD Black (which you already have) or a Barracuda (2-3-4 TB, if you need more space), which will give you enough speed. As for the torrent: you will make the downloads directly to the HDD, which can give you up to 50 MB/s (for torrents, the SSDs can be maxxed up only if you have a Gigabit Ethernet port and an insanely fast internet connection, something like 500MB/s, meaning 4000Mbps).

Of course, if you wanted just a capacity upgrade, go with any of the HDD you listed (the 3GB one has 7200 rpm, while the 4GB SSHD has 5900 rpm; the classic HDD has the edge while writing).

What do you mean by classic in your last line? THe WD black or 'classic' as in non-hybrid, ie the Barracuda

So I have a fios connection and max out at 7mbps right now which I am sure is as quick as the black can write. Hard wired connection. Something to think about though is IF i were to set my utorrent directory inside one of my green drives. How would that work?

How much cache/space would I require on the SSD? Would my download speed be accelerated because the DL goes through the SSD, but the copy/write to the external slowed down?

Thanks Cristy. Oh and btw, nice glasses. They match with your skin tone.

By "classic" I meant an HDD, not an SSHD (hybrid).

I am positively sure your WD Black can write well over the 7mbps, your connection (or the peers) is holding the transfer rate down (test your connection's speed: http://www.speedtest.net/); even if you will go for a WD Green or other 5400-5900 rpm HDD, you should obtain over 10MB/s (80Mbps) in worst case scenario (when the HDD is almost full and it is fragmented).

I wouldn't bother to cache the downloads on the SSD, the connection is too slow for the SSD to make a difference and you'll waste a good chunk of space. The only thing you should do is to do the downloads on the first HDD partition (the fastest area of any HDD is at the beginning of the drive). Why are you saying "external", you have the intention to take out the HDD, put it in a HDD rack and use it through an USB connection?

As for the glasses: that was the only frame which suits the shape of my head :)

As I read the whole thread, I got confused lol. How did the storage thread go to internet speeds all of a sudden?

Well, it was because the OP asked if a much faster storage device could lead to faster downloads.
