I've read the article for the GTX 970 and 980 second gen Maxwell GPU's but I am currently in a big dilemma. I currently own a Corsair CX 500 Watt power supply and I am torn between the R9 280X and GTX 970. I know that since the 970 hasn't been released yet it's hard to make any assumptions about real world tests regarding the potential gamer population that's going to be using these cards. My question is the following. Can I use GTX 970 with the 500 watt PSU I currently own? If not what would be the best graphics card for the money I could get without changing my Power Supply? Also please take into consideration that I'm currently using an EVGA GTX 660 FTW ACX. In addition the XFX R9 280X DD claims to be needing a minimum of 750 watt PSU to run properly as mentioned in XFX's website. The GTX 970 on the other hand requires at lest a 500 Watt power supply but might be damaged in the long run if there isn't enough power coming from the PSU. I was thinking of purchasing an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G1 650W Full Modular Power Supply in order to be safe and sound and perhaps future proof my system a bit more.

Current PC Specs:

BitFenix Prodigy Mini ITX Case
Biostar TH-61 ITX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-3570K(running at default 3.4 GHz)
Corsair CX 500 Watt PSU
8(2x4) GB Corsair XMS3 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
60 GB Kinsgston V300 SSD
Seagate Barracuda 500 GB HDD
EVGA GTX 660 FTW ACX
2x BeQuiet 120mm Fans
1 standard BitFenix case fan.

Thanks in advance.

900 series is out. 500W will barely manage with a 970, 30A is the requirement, 38A is what PSU provides, but its capacitors are known to melt on high load, so I'd keep the distance. XFX Pro 550W or Antec VP550P are both great PSUs for the price, and enough for 970. You'd not want to consider 280X now as 970 is better than even 290 and 780.

GTX 970 is NOT out yet in the UK. All websites I checked say that delivery dates are set for the 3rd of October. Also when you're saying the capacitors melt are you referring to the EVGA SuperNova G1 or the Corsair CX500?

So should I get the XFX PRO 550 or the EVGA SuperNova G1 ?

In the UK they have a £20 difference and for that you get 80 PLUS GOLD certification and fully modular design not to mention the extra 100 Watts.

Whichever is cheaper, I was in impression that XFX should be cheaper. Both will run the build fine. Certification doesn't make a difference until you use your rig 24/7.
