I have 2 external HDDs where I store music and such on one and the other drive is my Steam drive.

I am having issues with the external that houses my music and such. Randomly it becomes read only. I am running Windows 8.1 and I have used the following to remove the write protection many times for this issue:

"Open the command prompt box with right click and run as administrator
Type each of these commands one at a time in this order:

diskpart
list volume
select volume n (where n = the problem volume)
attributes disk clear readonly
attributes volume clear readonly

Steps to remove write protection from external drive:

1. Go to registry editor.
a) Click on start orb and type regedit in the search field.
b) Select regedit from the programs list.
2. Now that the registry editor is open, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
3. If the key exists, go to step 7.
4. In case StorageDevicePolicies doesn’t exist, you will need to create a new one.

To do so:

a) Right click on the blank field and select New > Key.
b) Name the new key as StorageDevicePolicies.
5. Once this is done, highlight StorageDevicePolicies, and then create a New DWORD (32-bit) Value named as WriteProtect.
6. Double click on WriteProtect, and set its value data to 0.
7. If the key already exists, double Click on WriteProtect and change its value from 1 to 0 to enable write access.
8. Close the registry editor.

Now try transfering the files to your external device. You should be able to transfer successfully after performing the steps listed above."

But it fails randomly and I have to redo it. Is there an ACTUAL fix for this? This issue was far worse in Win7 for me.

Either you have a virus that is trying to encrypt your drive and hold it hostage, or the Steam DRM is being it's usually pissy self. Run Malwarebytes scan and try disabling steam.

Edit: You may also want to look for root kits. TDSSkiller or Kaspersky should do for this
