Phenom x4 965 @stock (3.4Ghz)
550ti
ASRock 960gm (pcie 2.0 , terrible/risky to OC)
PSU -cheap 500W that I want to get rid of as fast as I will know how much wattage will be needed
1080p & 60Hz gaming , supersampling whenever possible

Budget :
Anything at cost of GTX 970 & below (Poland , so I won't convert as prices vary across countries)

Sorry guys for the thread but I think that my head is going to explode. After reading through countless of different opinions, it feels like I know less than when I've started.

Basiclly I don't mind that few games will be bottlenecked by CPU.

Solution
Since my R9-290X wasn't a bottleneck killer with the Phenom II X4 965BE at 4GHz, I can only presume the GTX 970 will be only a minor bottleneck. Not a deal breaker IMO. Is you Phenom a Black Edition?

I have another machine with a Phenom II X4 965BE @ 4.0 GHz. I am running a R9-280 and am experiencing no bottlenecks so far. I recently tried out the R9-290X in it and still the old Phenom II X4 did not reach 100% usage running game benchmarks:
Tomb Raider
Hitman Absolution
Metro LL

I think the new maxwell-equipped GTX 970 would be slightly bottlenecked unless you can OC the Phenom to at least 4.0 GHz.

Thanks for reply. I kinda feared that this mobo will go to trash.
Could you estimate how much bottlenecked 970 would be? I know that this is stupid question and cannot be answered but educated guess will suffice (like 2% or 10% )

No , it's not . I think that I'll be looking for used motherboard with some oc potential.
Thanks man, you've really cleared up this for me. I knew that my CPU could be a bit anemic to drive r290/970 but I couldn't find how much.

I was going for r290 but nvdia finally came with decent price in my country. I'll wait till AMD conference .I hope they'll announce something big (20nm&hbm :) ) . Highly unlikely but they have been awfully quiet so who knows .
