Basically, my laptop screen is broken so I'm using it through HDMI on my tv, it works fine. Most of the time.

But now I have a major problem, my main user account (administrator) is showing the message 'cannot load user profile'.

I know how to fix this in safe mode and I can figure out how to access safe mode as my laptop screen goes grey in the corner when I start up and tap F8 then tap down once and press enter starts safe mode.

BUT...

...Safe mode doesn't seem to work through HDMI!

Is there any way I can get safe mode up through HDMI?

Please help.

Solution
Many laptops have a key to cycle between internal display, external display and both - but some software might be required to manage the special-function keys.

If that is not an option, another possibility might be to open the laptop and disconnect the internal display so the GPU should no longer detect and this should force it to default to HDMI.

Thanks, I feared that. Don't suupose it's possible to recover the files from the missing administrator account using another account that's not an administrator is it?

Mine does have the display cycle key but it's not doing anything in safe mode. I'm not too sure what the second part of your answer means, I'm not too great with these sort of things - I'm guessing you mean pull out the cable which connects the screen to all the important stuff?

Invaliderror you are a genius! Didn't have a clue what I was doing but I took the back off my screen and pulled out the connectors and now HDMI is default. And I've now restored my user account.

Thank you so much

The problem is in safe mode, not all services are started. Go to the registry and allow the "DispBrokerDesktopSvc" to start in safe mode. This is how in windows 10 I get the video going on machines that only use HDMI

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network\DispBrokerDesktopSvc]

This is a five year old thread. I doubt the OP still has the problem. Thread closed.
