I am building a system to upgrade an aging HP Media Center PC. (Pentium III). The new system is an i5 and I am thinking to upgrade to Windows 8.1, but might delay that expenditure in favor of some extra hardware (SSD). I am planning to use my existing hard drive (a quite new WD blue 7200rpm 1 TB). My question is: If I just mount that disk (with Vista loaded ) in the new box will it boot? If I have to wipe the disk and re-install everything anyway, I'll just go with replacing the OS from the git-go.

More about : swap disk system

Will probably get blue screens of death. An install of windows from scratch is recommended. You can get away with that if the MB's are similar especially the same manufacturer with similar drivers & configuration files.

Probably not.
Just go with the new OS install.
