If we knew it wouldn't be a surprise, would it? It's not a new high-end CPU architecture, since they're starting from scratch and that's expected no sooner than 2017-ish. Could be something HSA-related, could be new graphics card(s), could be another acquisition/licensing of the Radeon brand to something else. Who knows.

There was a tweet regarding competition:
Winston Churchill loved men who grinned when fighting. AMD relishes competition. You ain't seen nothing yet. @AMDRadeon @NVIDIAGeForce

With the Nvidia twitter referenced at the end, which honestly means what else. There is also a picture of an AMD reference shroud that has been circulated, which may nod to a r9 390.
If anything this could be a new GPU (390) or a new firepro.

Everything should be taken with a grain of salt, and nothing will likely compete with the 970 and 980 in price.

Considering that the 980 isn't much more powerful than the 780 ti... I have a feeling Radeon might win this year.

The pricepoint of the 980 is really the staple and its a decent amount more powerful... the good thing there is the price and the power savings... though ur right they should have had a 990 thats just INSANELY powerful with no regard to cost or power to compete with the 295x2

Exactly, or lower the price on the titan z

Idk how much they need that when 970 sli is about the same for 300+ cheaper

Makes sense for it to be a graphics card with the recent Nvidia release. Also with the context of the tweet "radeon" and "@GeForce" both reference graphics cards, not processors. They seem to have filled out the 2XX line of cards, so it will likely be a card(s) named 3XX for whatever that is worth. It is probably still 28nm process though so likely no huge performance boost.

That's what everyone was saying with Maxwell, too.

To be fair, they were correct. There was an improvement, but not giant. And the efficiency improvements are less from hardware, but rather from firmware techniques to dynamically reduce power use when performance isn't needed. Efficiency is not much changes under true 100% use stress tests.

This isn't to say it's not a nice improvement, but the same on 20nm will (hopefully) be better! Particularly since 20nm may be the last node we see for a decade or more.

Let me fix that:

"Considering that the 970 isn't much more powerful than the 780ti..." For $330... XD

The 980 IS quite a bit more powerful.

Eh, the Titans are not gaming cards. I dont know why people think the Titan Z is relevant at all to the enthusiast market even ignoring its pricing.

Yea, and everyone is still saying it. The 900 series doesnt really bring much in terms of performance, just making it cheaper and more power efficient. I think for a massive performance boost over the 700 series we are going to have to wait for the Maxwell Titan (assuming its a whole new GPU, not just GM204 + CUDA and Shader cores).

But the price/performance is hard to beat. In my opinion that is a BIG deal for hardware

IMO I think people who are saying that the 900 series is not much of an improvement are living under a rock.
