Hi All,
I want to know the basic difference between FX and APUs when it comes to utilizing the on-board graphics card. With FX - I know that you'll have to either get a dedicated graphics card or use a motherboard with on-board graphics card. But how does it work with APUs?

For example, ASRock FM2A88M-HD+ has on-board Radeon HD 7000 - so what will happen when I use an APU with this motherboard? Will the GPU cores on the processor will be wasted/unused?

Thanks!

The FM2A88M-HD+ motherboard does not have integrated graphics the graphics come from a supported APU that is installed into the motherboard. So nothing will be wasted unless you install and use a dedicated GPU.

It will work the same with APU's. If you have an APU enabled processor(FM2, FM2+), the motherboard will typically auto detect for an added graphics processor of some sort, and will choose to go with whatever has been added on.(In this case, the APU.)

So yes, the on-board GPU cores would be wasted and unused.

But, as caqde said, the FM2A88M-HD+ doesn't really have onboard graphics.

no fm2 socket motherbds come with onboard video, they all get it from the APU.

Fx processors take socket am3+ and those boards may have onboard video but typically its hd3000 of hd4250 both of which are ancient and just good enough for an htpc these days.
