Doing a triple monitor 1440p setup. Will the GTX 970 SLI suffice, or should I be doing at GTX 980 SLI?

On the sideline, what power supply is required for either config?
-also, any casing recommendations?

Solution
You want as much GPU grunt as possible for a resolution like that, go for the 980's.
Triple 970's are possible, but performance scaling beyond two cards drops off hard, and a value proposition is lost considering you need to spend a lot more on the motherboard (if going Intel) and PSU.

A 750W would be fine for either. These cards are ridiculously low power consumption.

You'll want as much GPU power as possible. A 3x1440 setup is 11 megapixels, 25% more than a 4K screen, and you probably already know just how intensive 4K is from any recent GPU performance review. 970s are certainly quite capable, but if you can afford it, definitely go 980s as they are generally ~15% faster than 970s at the same clockspeed and are just as capable of hitting high (1400-1500mhz) overclocks.

-Edit-

Actually, I forgot to mention, if you don't already have a machine setup for this, you should probably go 3-way 970s as they will provide even better performance that 2x980s for nearly the same price.
You'll want around a 750W PSU to run either 2-way 970s or 980s, or at LEAST 1kW for three-way 970s. More capacity may be required if you plan on reaching high overclocks on both CPU and GPU(s).

Hi,

triple 1440p is a beast to run.
minimum GPU should be 970 3way at least. 980s better. but be prepared for stuttering and problems.
At least a 1kW PSU of tier one company..

Good luck.

thanks guys. I'll be building the computer in about sometime next month so I'll get some time to mull over the gfx choices. I'm glad I held up the purchase of the Dell U2713HMs as it seems the U2715H is releasing soon (thin bezels great for triple monitor).

Any suggestions for casings? (probably AIO watercooling, if it suffices. I'm not sure about the heat for 2/3 slis)
