First of all do the backup of the existing windows registry, just to ensure that everything can be reverted back to its original if anything goes wrong.

1. type regedit in run
2. traverse through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>>>SYSTEM>>>NETWORK
3. under it look for 'Connection'. You will find the all the network connections in your system. Look for the older connections which now dont exist. you have to traverse all the connections under the "Network Keys" on the left side.
4. click on the "connection" under the "Network" keys to look for the "name value" on the reading panel which is on the right side. Now you can identiy the older network connections in your system which dont exisit.
5. Delete the older connections under the "network" keys on the left side of registry as a whole which you want to remove.
6. reset the current connection number of the current network connection back to original number by editing the name key in the reading pane.

There is nothing wrong with the network number - it is just a nuisance. If you changed your network infrastructure between the two pictures (different router, different IP setup), your network number will change, but this is not a source of problems.
