Hello everyone. I am new and in over my head so I am seeking help. Recently my ASRock Extreme 4 Gen 3 motherboard crashed and my computer will not turn on. I utilize the computer for 3D work and gaming.

I decided to upgrade from:

MOBO: ASRock Extreme 4 Gen 3
OS: Windows 7 OEM
SDD: none
CPU: i7 2600k 1155

Upgrade:

MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark1
OS: Windows 8.1 OEM
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB
CPU: i7 4790K 1150

I am keeping the current RAM (16GB), GPU (6950), HDD (2TB), and PSU (850) at the moment.

I have read some of the forums and seems I need to format the HDD that contains Windows 7 and then install Windows 8.1 on the SDD. Several posts mention how to do this, but in those posts the computer turns on. I am confused since my computer will have a new motherboard and Windows 7 OEM, initially. What will happen when I turn it on? How do I format the HDD and SDD?

Also, I assume all my files will be deleted and will need to be copied prior to formatting.

I am sure these are basic questions, but as stated I am new and trying to learn. The more information provided the better. Thank you for your help.

there two tricks to help you. one because both mb use close to the same intel chipset. try booting off the old drive first in safe mode and deleting old drivers in windows system and updating the intel chipset drivers when windows 7 reboots.
if you can get into windows 7 that way with not much issue you can sign up for google drive and back up online up to 15g of your own data. the other trick is unplug the sata data cable to the hard drive and install windows 8.1 to the new ssd. power down after you installed all of the drivers you need for the mb. plug the sata data cable back in on reboot windows 8.1 will see the new drive and give it a letter.
Yup if you format everything is gone / will be deleted. Well you cant copy anything really except contacts and docs you want to keep

Since Windows 8 will probably be different from Win7,. And you cant copy programs you installed on Win7 to Win8. They wont work. You'll have to reinstall them after the install.

You can remove the Win7 hdd (Is Win7 on a separate hdd , or is it on the SSD you're installing Win8 on)?.

You dont have to format Win7 before you install Win8. The windows 8 setup will do this for you

Just delete the partition on the SSD if its got Win7 on it first, then let Windows 8 setup recreate the partitions it needs. Then install it
