When it depends usually on if it is a notebook or desktop computer because you didn't describe is it a notebook or desktop and therefore its harder to know the possibilities.

man if you r overclocking stop it
make sure all fans or heatsinks are runing
if its not enough
google how to make cooling fans aggressive
still crashing keep cpu panel open and keep it on to of the table instead of inside the table or cover under the table

How old is the GPU? If you feel comfortable about it.. I suggest cleaning it, taking apart the cooler, maybe even put new paste on the chip.

Before any of that, make sure you have optimal airflow in your case.. top+back = exhaust, everything else intake(for most cases).

gttrz - desktop
rohan- not overclocked, fans and heatsinks are fine, I already had the side panel open, its not inside of a table or under a table.
daz- its a xfx 6870, I cleaned the blades the best I could without an air compressor but I don't think its dust.

I have a big fan blowing over the open panel accelerating all the air above it outwards(going with the flow), it made a 10c difference on idle(59 to 49w/fan)

i've had the video card for about 2 1/2 years so I probably need to apply thermal compound but I also suspect something with my drivers, but compound is easier so ill try that out.

if you guys know of a way to stop it from crashing even when it thinks its overheating( I read alot that 77-80c is normal ), please do tell .

Maybe try to reseat heatsink because thermalpaste gets dry and unconductive afterwhile, with afterburner you can keep check on gpu won't go over 77c

Every chip is different tbh, and being as its 2 years old.. It isn't uncommon for chips to start going bad. Some don't all of sudden don't work... some chips actually die threw time..

I would try removing the cooler and re-applying compound. Best of luck.

gttrz- I have a way to monitor the temps, and the fans are already 100% but the thing im trying to accomplish is having windows not crash on "overheats" or raise the "overheat limit", or find out if its possible or not.

I have a hyper x cooler on my cpu already, im talking about gpu video card crashes or "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered message"

and im sorry all, I mean crash to desktop, not entire computer shutdown.
