I recently upgraded from a very old laptop to the Lenovo 2 13 line, and am wondering exactly what can I run on it. Besides Minecraft I have very rarely dabbled in PC gaming, so all this is a bit new to me.

The specs for my laptop are:
intel core i5 4200u @ 1.60GHz 2.30GHz
8 GB of RAM
There is no dedicated video graphics, but it 1792 MB of shared system memory

I know I won't be able to run graphic heavy games, but will I be able to at least be able to play indie games or pre 2011 games?

Well, if you mean the Lenovo Yoga 2 13", it has Intel HD 4400 graphics and can play many games on low settings.

My laptop has the Intel HD 4000 graphics (a little slower) and it can play Skyrim on low, Marvel Heroes 2015 on low, Banished on low, Plants versus Zombies on medium, and old games like KOTR on high.

Yes it is the Yoga 13 inch. So can I run games like Gone Home on it as well?

Unfortunately, that game says that it does not support the Intel HD 4000 on Windows 8. I assume that means the HD 4400 as well. The system requirements page for Gone Home is at:

http://fullbright.company/technical-support/

The Steam page for it does say "Intel HD Graphic 4000 NOT CURRENTLY SUPPORTED on Windows 8". That implies that they will be working on it.

There is a workaround posted at:

Good luck if you plan to try it out.

There are games that the Intel HD 4400 should be able play but not at 1920x1080. I currently play Star Trek Online (free 2 play) and have tested using the Intel HD 4400 on my laptop instead of the Radeon HD 8850m. I was able to play STO with decent performance at 1600x900 and mostly low settings.

Based on my experience testing Mass Effect 3 on a laptop with the Intel HD 3000 at 1366x768 resolution, the Intel HD 4400 (about 50% more powerful than the HD 3000) should not have any problems whatsoever at 1366x768 using the "mainstream" graphics settings. 1600x900 should be possible as well... with lower performance of course.

Skyrim is also playable on low settings at 1366x768 resolution. Looking for mods that replaces the standard textures with slightly lower quality textures can help improve performance. Actually, there are plenty of mods available for Skyrim which helps improve performance.

Here's a link to a discussion about playing games with the Intel HD 4400. There is a link to a Google Doc with a list of games. Not all listed games have been tested though since it seems to be a work in progress.
