Three issues with self build: high pitch squeal from PSU, boot to black screen, sporadic USB ports

Hi,

I've recently built my own desktop and it's my first build. In general the system runs fine, but occasionally I encounter some rather frustrating problems.

Firstly, the PSU will often make a high pitched squeal on boot and for several minutes afterwards. I've done some reading on the forums, and it may be that it's a leaking capacitor. I received the PSU from a friend who described it as 'hardly used'. It may just be that it needs replacing, but perhaps someone knows of other possible issues.

Secondly, the computer will sometimes boot to a black screen. It will let me log into Windows, and then the screen will go to black to. No cursor, no HDD light on the case, nothing. I've made sure that the screen resolution is compatible with the monitor, however I only have a generic driver as the manufacturer did not release a Windows 7 driver for the particular monitor I have (as it it rather old.) This issue is usually resolved after rebooting the computer 1-3 times.

Thirdly, the USB ports will randomly stop working. All of them (front of the case and back panel of the motherboard.) I've made sure all the connections are correct and none are loose, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. This is the most concerning problem. The USB ports will stop working entirely without any indication and will remain nonfunctional until I reboot the computer. This includes the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.

I have tried reinstalling all the drivers, I have updated the BIOS, and I have reset the CMOS. None of these have resolved any of the issues. I have not yet tried reinstalling the OS, but that would be the next step.

If anyone has any experienced insight or recommendations, I would be more than happy to hear it.

Thanks!

Solution
Your PSU shouldn't make a high pitched squeal. Change it. Maybe get a better quality PSU eg Seasonic M12II 520 - $67 at Newegg.

There's a fair chance that a bad PSU is causing the other problems too.

Can't help you but I'm having a problem with my USB as well on my MSI Z97 U3 Plus motherboard in that they are slow as a snail even though all drivers are updated, reset CMOS you name it. I'm beginning to think MSI has a problem with their boards. I've called tech support and they are really friendly and helpful but I didn't build a PC to run like a snail in transferring files from SD to SDD and back.

I think I'll end up replacing the PSU anyways. That seems like a suitable replacement. Out of curiosity, how would the PSU affect the USB ports and monitor in this sense? It seems to me it would have something to do with the motherboard.

Please update once you have replaced your PSU (mine has been making this weird noise since yesterday). I'm curious to know if replacement solves all your issues or just the god awful annoying sound! Ty :)

Well, it definitely fixed the noise. However, the day I installed the new PSU, the entire system stopped working. There was an audible zap and now the computer will not boot. I tried with both the new PSU and the old one, and nothing. I did the paperclip test, and both PSU's turned on. Then I tried removing all the components save the CPU and heatsink, and I got no LEDs or beeps from the case speaker. This leads me to believe that the problems were a mix of the old PSU and the motherboard, but I can't say for sure.
