I hope this is the correct forum - it may be a hardware problem.
I have a one-year-old PC with the specs below and have installed Win 8.
Asrock H77 PRo4-M, 16MB RAM
Samsung SSD 256HB
Hitachi 3TB HDD
Radeon HD 7850 2GB
I installed Win 8.1 both on the SSD (the current boot volume) and on a 256GB partition of the HDD just in case the SSD gave problems.
Often, I find the screen suddenly goes dark, the disk light flickers for a moment and it hangs - no keypress wakes it and pressing the power button does not shut down - I have to hold the power button down.
I can reproduce that when I try to install the graphics drivers. It is currently in the default 1024x768 and the Device Manager shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor".
I try to install the ATI Radeon drivers and it goes dark before completion.
The Device Manager shows under "Other devices" a PCI Simple Communications controller and an unknown Device.
I suspect that is the problem but am not sure how to proceeed.
Any suggestions?

Update ... tried downloading latest AMD drivers 08.00.0916. On install, same black screen hard hang.
Also: in Device Manager, right-click Microsoft Basic Adaptor , click update driver, it downloads, says "installing"... same hang.
What to do?
This seems to be the same problem but back in 2013:

If I even just Update Driver, Browse, it hangs while I'm looking for the driver.
