It's been a while with any posts from me.
As many of you know already, Noctua Do not offer any fan clips for a third fan, I have recently asked them but all have been denied due to the impracticality and the noise levels. This is what i really care about most though, which is the looks. So I thought what the heck and got one myself and stick 5 fans on it, just for fun. Bearing in mind Noctua have said their is a max 0.5 degree difference in temperature with a third fan, but I though i should go ahead and test with 2/3/5 fans, With the cooler mounted in the sideways position.
Test setup: intel i7 4930k @ 4.9Ghz
Gigabyte X79-UP4
Gigabyte Windforce 3x R9 290X
G-Skill trident X 16GB 1600Mhz
Aercool Touch 2100 fan controller
Samsung 840 PRO 256GB SSD
Antec HCG-900 900w PSU
Cooler Master HAF X with all case fans installed.
Noctua NH D15 consists of - 2 x NF P12's PWM, 1 x NF A14, 2x NF 15's.
All test results listed are with fan speed @ 1100 RPM.
2 NH-A15's; Idle 39 degrees celsius, load 89 degrees celsius.
2 NH-A15's and one A14; Idle 37 degrees celsius, load 86 degrees celsius.
2 NF A15's, 2 NF P12's PWM, 1 NF A14; Idle 35 degrees, Load 81 degrees.
Now, the results i got are pretty good and with an error margin to be accepted, I do believe there is a difference even with the overkill of five fans, also keeping in mind the noise is noticeably different also.
So to all Noctua NH-D15 owners, if you want more fans on your cooler simply buy some wire and make your own clips. Instead of doing their own clip design i did a simple clip which is straight down the length of the heatsink and latches onto the 140mm mounting holes on the NF A14.
