Okay, I have seen people ask which is the better CPU for gaming, an i3 or an i5. Obviously the answer in general is an i5 is better than an i3. What I want to know is bang for the buck which is better. With gaming clock speed matters more than # of cores at the moment. Right now Newegg has a 3.2 Ghz i5 for $189 and a 3.8 Ghz i3 for $159. $30 isn't that much difference in price. what is better here? Is the increased cache going to make up for the lower clock speed in most games?

Number of cores actually is more important. The only reason the AMD CPUs manage to keep up with Core i5 CPUs some times is because some games can make use of all 8 CPU cores, and many now use 4 and 6 cores.

Clock speed is important, but its easy to see improvements from having more cores. Clock speed has to have a significant edge to beat out the extra cores. Long story short, the more cores will help much more than the 600Mhz.

Also it would be better to get this one at that price:

If you want to save more money the 3.2Ghz i5 is also available for $169
