Windows 7 backup to WD Passport Fails

Just got a 1TB WD Passport and am trying to backup my Windows 7 HP laptop. I set it to run at night and when I wake up it says it was unsuccessful. When I tried to run disk check it hangs up at 285 files. A suggestion was it is timing out because the drive is USB 3.0 and I need to get a 3.0 hub and it should be fine. Anyone else hear of this and is this a good suggestion?

My Passport should be compatible with the USB 2.0 as well, it's just that the transfer is a bit slower.
I would suggest to first try to re-install your USB drivers before going through the trouble of getting a new...

I thought of that already and set it to never go to sleep or dim and it still would not backup. I talk to some others about this and think it is the power problem with usb 2.0 verses 3.0. I am going to try a separate powered hub and see if that does the trick.

I was doing some work with a laptop and set it to not sleep and came back the next day to find it powered down. You need to be sure you turn off hibernation as well as sleep....

Also I'd recommend you to use WD SmartWare or Acronis True Image WD Edition as back-up softwares.
SmartWare is specifically designed for WD products to backup data:

Acronis True Image WD Edition you can use for a full image backup/cloning or migration, including your system files:

With both - you can choose what gets backed up and what doesn't.

SuperSoph_WD that worked! SmartWare said it was always backup successfully. I ran it to be sure and sure enough it was fine. Not sure why Windows said otherwise. I hope this doesn't complicate retrieval when trying to restore.

As for your question: Nope. Windows won't be able to restore from SmartWare if your system crashes.
SmartWare is a software that backs up only files and data.
You need to have a System Image or System Repair Disc to restore Windows if it crashes.
You can use Windows Backup since you already have it on your system as an option to create a System image and/or System Repair Disc. Here's a link that might help you out doing that:
