I recently bought a MSI Gtx 770 TF from Newegg for $300, this was 1 week before the GTX 900 series was released. If I refer to the benchmark scores on http://videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html you can see that the performance is fantastic for a Gtx 980. The thing is though, is that if I try to sell my Gtx 770 the value will be worth nowhere close to what I had originally paid.

Here is the price of a GTX 980 - $550~
Here is the price of a GTX 770 - $249~ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127741&cm_re=gtx_770-_-14-127-741-_-Product

If I were to purchase a second Gtx 770 it would be $300(original)+$249(second)=$549

I do know that Sli cards produce more heat, but overall what would the performance comparison be?

Computer Specs for compatibility:
MSI Gtx 770
MSI Z97 Motherboard
i5-4690K
EVGA Supernova 750w
8gb Hyper X

Solution
1) First of all, I wouldn't get a GTX980 when it only averages 15% faster than a GTX970 for games but costs a lot more.

2) GTX980 vs 2xGTX770 depends a lot on the games. Compared to a SINGLE GTX770 (reference) it's 50% more powerful on average though I've seen 75% in a couple games.

So the GTX980 is going to beat the 2xGTX770 at times, and at other times it will be behind.

*It's also worth noting that there's a new technology called MFAA that's still getting optimizations so if used that may increase your frame rate a bit for the new cards.

**You have a great system, so don't stress over the whole upgrade thing. There will always be something better around the corner...

I would get a 2nd 770 gtx and sli. I run 2x evga 770 Sc Acx sli and I kill the 980gtx in everything! +30 fps in Tomb Raider, +25 in Metro LL. Their's just no reason to buy another 28nm process. If the 980ti beats my 770 Sc sli then I would consider that card. Next year hopefully.

I have 2 Gigabyte Gtx 770 4gb Windforce 3x cards. They pretty much demolish every game at ultra settings and 1080p. The only game I cant run is Watch Dogs but that isn't the cards fault. I have vsync on most my games because the refresh of my monitor is only 60hz. When I bench games though I ha e it off and I usually get around 100fps on any game at ultra settings. These cards are still going to be beastly for a couple years until game designers start making games for the new architecture of video cards released. That and new game engines designed to take advantage of the Maxwell chips in the new cards. So... chill.

Comes your couple GTX 770 with 2GB or 4GB? The mine ones have 4GB each and I would say that my SLI array is more or less equivalent to the 3GB GTX 980, but 2x GTX 770 4GB are more expensive than a single GTX 980. So if one goes with the GTX 980 is not a bad idea.
