I bought a Sata to eSata cable (with mounting plate) so I could access an external hard drive directly on the Sata controller, but the computer does not see it in Bios or Windows. Is this possibly a defective cable or something else?

Hi

In most cases the eSata to sata adapter backplate is data only
Have you provided sata power cable

2.5" drives use 5V 3.5" drives need 5V & 12V

I use a small mains psu with sata + molex plugs as part of a USB to sata & ata converter
Or you need a sata power extension lead or something similar which feeds the external hard disk from the main psu

The other possibility is that the sata port has been disabled in the bios
