Will this build work? It says on the PC part picker page 'Some Intel Z87 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs.' Is this a problem? And is a cheap CPU cooler worth adding (this will be my first time building a PC so I want to keep it simple)? Thanks.

Have you looked at the 2 TB model I gave you 6 posts back ? Sits in1 st place on THGs HD charts

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/hdd-charts-2013/-17-PCMark-7-Gaming,2915.html
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178380

That units sits in 1st place on the THG charts, the WD Blue sits in 63rd place.

For MoBo / CPU combo, it's hard to top this for $350 ...k processor can be overclocked when you feel ready for it.

On my box.....

Boot from HD .... 21.2 seconds
Boot from SSHD .... 16,5 seconds
Boot from SSD ..... 15.6 seconds

You can buy bigger but cost per GB is much higher. Logic is ya put your OS and some other stuff on the SSD ... that gets you the 15.6 second boot. Then you put all ya other stuff on a HD.

So, if it's really not all that exciting if you to boot fast, the SSD won't really be a life changing experience. I boot my lappie each morning and it's 16.5 second boot time isn't all that exciting as after hitting the button, I'm off the the coffee machine and getting myself a fresh cup 'a java.

I don't recommend that users invest in a SSD over an SSHD until they have maxed out how far they can go with GFX and CPU ....I'd move up to a 970 / 980 before I'd consider an SSD.... I'd move up to a 4690k / 4790k before I bought an SSD.

This PSU is very well reviewed..... one of the best made and only $65
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096

However a 750 watter will allow you to add a 2nd card in SLI down the road....and this on is only $50 and is recommended by Jonnyguru .... not a G2 but for the price hard to turn away from.

With all ya saved, I'd invest in a case that is capable of handling that future upgrade to 2 cards ...say a Phanteks Enthoo Pro

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=Enthoo+Pro&N=-1&isNodeId=1

Whatever 970 card strikes ya fancy ..... based upon recent 6xxx thru 780 / 780 Ti techpowerup reviews:

MSI Gaming Series > Asus DCII > Gigabyte Windforce / EVGA SC

And do you think the 'G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB' is better than the 'Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600', and the 'MSI Z97-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard' are better than the 'ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X Killer ATX LGA1150' and 'Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core'?

okay.. the msi motherboard from newegg GIVES YOU FREE KINGSTON HYPER X RAM.

i read that WD has a better failure rate than Seagate -2/3TB hdd s

Well, yes, that's why I recommended them

Memory - The Gskill is 2133, the Corsair is 1600 .... 33% faster and cheaper to boot .... note: ya memory is 33% faster .... your PC will be 2 - 5% faster on average....sometime higher and often 0.

MoBo - The G45 is one of the most well reviewed boards last few years ... the Z87 version won over 40 awards, it's a gaming oriented MoBo, does SLI, great overclocking features, ruggedized design and it's priced great with a $10 MIR and $20 combo discount.

CPU - The 4690k is the top of the line i5 and is overclockable

Storage - The 1st place SSHD (9.78 Mb/s) gives you the 2 TB capacity you wanted and is the fastest unit on the market (see THG charts above). Other common drives like the WD Blue (63rd place - 4.01 MB/sec). the Seagate is 2.4 times as fast as the Blue in the gaming benchmark.

I have had / have about 8 or 9 of them myself ... installed a dozen or so others. So far ..... knocks on forehead (aka wood) .... no failures yet. They under some extreme usage in my box as the 2 are used

24/7 as SOHO file server
up to 12 hours a day as a AutoCAD workstation
6-8 hours a day as flight simulator / gaming box (Son No. 1 is a pilot)

Here's the latest published failure rates for each brand

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/920-6/disques-durs.html

- Seagate 0.86% (previous 0,95%)
- Toshiba 1.02% (previous 1,54%)
- Hitachi 1.08% (previous 1,16%)
- Western 1.13% (previous 1,19%)

Are you looking at the links ?

Sample ....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1708009

1x MSI Z97-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (Model:Z97-G45 GAMING) $139.99

1x Intel Core i5-4690 Haswell Quad-Core 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600 BX80646I54690 (Model:BX80646I54690) $224.99

1x HyperX Fury Black Series 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model HX316C10FB/8 (Model:HX316C10FB/8) $79.99

In that example, you get a $45 combo discount on the $445 total which pays for just over half the cost of the RAM stick .... my problems w/ this combo include:

1. For $15 more, you could get the 4690k
2. You only get one stick of dual channel RAM .... in order to use "dual channel", you need to install 2 sticks.
