Hello dear tom's hardware....-ers?
I have a question regarding overclocking my 660 and wether it's a bad overclocker or maybe I'm doing smth wrong.
So I tried OC-ing it without any bios stuff first and it goess to like +30MHz and THAT's it with the obligatory +10 (max) to power. If I OC the memory it throttles a lot, I'm using EVGA Precixion X 4.2.1 btw.
Now, not giving up I went to overclock dot net and they had a guide on how to replace your bios and stuff so u can get 1.212 mV and 150% power instead of 1.175 and 110%.
I got it to 1300+mhz without black screens and stuff like that but after some time it happened. So I lowered it just a bit and it seemed to work in like 1289 or smth like that. ( this was a while ago so I just know it was the next level below 1300mhz+ ).
Now the odd part, or mb it's not odd and I'm just ignorant, is that while playing Red Orchestra 2 ( which is a pretty demanding game on full ultra with all the bells and whistles and its 32/32 big war maps shooter, but not as demanding as MEtro:LL for example ) I could actually plat with my new very big OC. Also in Dota 2 the boost would go up to max and stay there for most of the time.
But in a game where those 5-10% extra performance would matter like Metro:Last Light, the power would rapidly go to 140-150% and then just tap out and start throttling like it needed EVEN more than 150% to hold that OC in place. Again, no blackscreen no artifacts in games just a lot of throttling because it reached 150% very fast and couldnt go past, or at least that's my interpretation, again probably ignorance.
I'm on the normal bios atm but i wouldnt mind going back to the modded one if there's something that I've missed. And I forgot to mention that my card does not overheat or anything like that. I've never seen it go past 62.
Oh yea, and my 1337-180degrees-headshot-420-blaze-it specs are:
Mobo: AsRock B85 Pro4
Ram: 8GB 1600Mhz
CPU: i5 4430 ( regret picking this one up and not the one with 3.5Ghz boost )
2 SSDs: 1 for games 1 for windows and a big ass 2TB HDD.
GPU: No clue !
PSU: Seasonic 620w Bronze ( SII12 or w/e it's called )
