Hello! I have never been able to fully understand motherboard specs, and I was curious if someone more informed would be able to let me know if my current motherboard can handle the new GTX 980.

My current motherboard is: ASRock H77 Pro4-M (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H77%20Pro4-M/)

I see that it has 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 Slot, and I see the GTX 980 state PCI-Express 3.0 x16. I guess my main concern is: will 1 slot be enough? I have read on various websites that "Size wise, the card takes up two PCI slots" -- is that more about case space?

Thank you for your time!

Solution
That is more about case space and motherboard layout. The layout issue is more of a concern for people that need other cards installed in a system. For instance if the primary (usually 1st) PCI-E 16x slot is right above an older PCI slot and you want/need to install a PCI device it might become an issue to have a Dual slot GPU in that motherboard. But otherwise there isn't much to really worry about. The biggest issue with a case and a GPU is the size of the card length wise as it might end up hitting the HDD case or just end up right before it with not enough room to connect the required power cables to the GPU.

your motherboard is fine like every other card it requires a single pcie slot look at case if you have space for 2 slots for a card then its fine.

gtx 980 is a dual slot card like many other high end card.
Another way to think of it is if you put 2 screws in to hold it in place, it's a dual slot card, 1 screw = single slot.

simple example of single and dual slot cards..
