No, not necessarily. It's just more convenient to have the drivers ready to install BEFORE upgrading so you don't have to waste time.

Plus it is a good idea to check first, as some old boards have no drivers for Win7.
Win 7 has many Network card drivers, but not all.
That will be the biggest problem, unless you have another computer to download with.
I had to install another network card, that win 7 did recognize, and download drivers, for the on-board that win didn't recognize.
I have other computers, but the driver sight was risky, and I wasn't putting my machines on it. e-machine drivers are fun.
