Hi Everyone,

I find that went i play games that achieve high fps, with vsync off i can smell and feel warm air coming out of the top exhaust in my case (NZXT H440) and even though my gpu (780ti) sits at around 70c in that situation it's something that really bothers me, i find that turning vsync on helps this issue as my gpu isn't doing as much work, it's not as noisy and i usually like vsync on anyway so it kind of half solves the issue, but this leads me onto my second problem....I plan on purchasing a second 144hz monitor in the future so that i can run my games at higher frame rates without screen tearing, but my worry is that if i get a 144hz monitor and i'm playing lots of games that are near 100fps or higher then my gpu will again produce this awful heat.

I did read a post on here that seemed to suggest that the gpu won't be doing as much work if you have a monitor capable of spitting out the frames it's producing but i never thought this was the case, surely if the gpu is producing those frames then it's irreverent whether a monitor is capable of displaying them?

Basically my real problem is that amount of heat i can smell coming from my case in high fps situations and it's been an issue ever since i built my computer a month ago, if it can be solved with vsync on and my gpu will indeed do less work with a 144hz monitor then i can live with that but if not then i really need to try and solve my heat issue.

I realize the NZXT H440 isn't the best in terms of air flow but it's such a popular case and surely there are people out there who don't have my problem, i'd like to get to the bottom of it once and for all, because my computer is 99% done, this issue is the last 1% and it's bugging me.

My fan setup is as follows

3 x Noctua sp120 front intake
2 x Corsair RED Led roof exhaust (attached to H100i rad)
1 x Corsair RED Led quiet edition rear exhaust

I even tried to put the fans right up at max, still spits out all this heat (i do realize heat is meant to come out of the exhaust but it doesn't feel normal to be sat gaming and smelling an oven.)

Would making the roof exhausts into intakes help? then my hot air is just coming out the rear and thus less overwhelming?

It's a long post and i appreciate any advice.

It's completely normal for you to have hot air coming out of your case, and you're going to have a slight smell because of what material the components are made out of. 70 degrees is nothing to worry about.

If you want though you could buy a full water block for the 780 ti which will reduce temps and stop this smell your talking about.
70 degrees is quite normal for a high end card like that, do not be worried.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah i realize that if i have an exhaust in the roof then naturally i have to expect warm air coming out, it's just really overwhelming sitting there smelling all this warm air, and my gpu does only sit at 70c but at the cost of a noisier fan.

Like i say, turning vsync on seems to help with both heat and noise issues but then i worry about getting a higher fps capable monitor in the future, is it true then that my gpu will do the same work regardless of what my monitor is capable of? If that's the case then there is basically no point in me getting a monitor higher than 60hz as the smell of heat will just return, i just find it strange because it's not like everyone has my problem people will happily game a high frame rates and not have it feel like an oven is turned on.

I may try turning the fans over into intakes, the case is so starved of cool air it needs all the help it can get.

Vsync basically just syncs your gpu's outputted frames to that of the monitor, So yes a 144hz monitor most likely will be the same as running vsync off.

Although once again that's not a bad temperature, If you really think that it is too hot, try also adding more ventilation to your room. Open some windows, air conditioning perhaps. My gpu which runs at 65 degrees does spew out alot of hot air but my windows basically just blow it away and also give cool air for the pc to intake.

If your room is not ventilated the pc will just suck back in that 70 degree air.

-good luck

Just a quick note for vsync
If you have a 60hz monitor then It will need an input of around 60 fps this is what vsync does but vsync off will probably waste rendering of excess frames

Also what power supply have you got. I would try to give the computer a good burn in test for at least an hour using some graphics intensive program such as heaven benchmark or valley benchmark and see what happens.
If the heat gets to be too much of an issue you could put more fans in the case or watercool the card if it is on your budget.

Cheers

Also may be a good idea to flip the top fans and keep the rear as an exhaust but maybe use a higher rpm fan for the rear to keep up.
Just some of my thoughts, good luck
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.

My psu is an EVGA SuperNova 850w G2 and it's actually really cool when i rum Kombustor. I even tried flipping the fans in the roof over and it doesn't seem to make any difference, the vent where the fans are located are obviously cooler but in terms of the heat and the smell it's still there.

I think just the H440 has poor airflow and because i want my fans operating at a low speed that contributes more to it.

I'm actually expecting delivery today of the NZXT Kraken G10 & a Corsair H55 water cooler, this apparently can lower temps down to the 50's when gaming so it should improve the heat issues i'm having.

I was meaning the graphics card how hot does it get
Amd sounds like you shouod have it sorted with the watercooler
