Please someone stop me.

I bought a 780 FTW edition just over a month ago. Just a few days ago, the 980 was released for damn near the same price, and it performs just as well if not better.

First and foremost, can anyone tell me if I screwed myself over by not waiting an extra month for a release no one knew was coming? In other words, how much better is the 980 over the 780 ftw edition?

Secondly- newegg decided they wanted to drive me further towards depression by having an "overstock" sale. They dropped the 780 ftw edition an additional 140$ from the "sale" price I bought it at, 500$.

It is currently at 360$. My second question is simple- Stop me from considering SLI so soon after choosing to just buy /one/ card, with the idea of upgrading to SLI many /years/ down the road, not a month later.

In other words, tell me if it's worth the money (360$ atm) to upgrade to SLI?

How much of an improvement would I even see?

Please someone tell me to just stfu and stop whining, because I'm in no financial state to be thinking about dropping another 400$~ dollars after just starting college. But still, don't lie, I really wanna know what's best here- I'm just really hoping the "best" thing to do is wait.

Which reminds me- how long will it be before this card (780 ftw edition) reaches a low price again?

Thank you all so much in advance, I'm really stressing out here. I lost 140$ by not waiting another month, and it sounds like I could have gotten a free upgrade anyways if I had waited. It just hurts to build my first PC and then get hit by these sales so soon after being happy with my build. Sorry for whining!

There are literally dozens of reviews that have come out over the last week detailing the 980s performance. Searching "GTX 980 review" should give you plenty of info but it looks like 10-15% over GTX 780 ti and 25-35% over the GTX 780 depending on the game and resolution.

I'd contact newegg. They might give you the difference in the new price. Otherwise you could just return it and buy it at the new price. You didn't give us any system specs so I have no clue if you can run SLI, or if it's needed. And we knew these new cards were coming. It's not like they didn't tell anyone. I'd probably keep your card and get newegg to give you the new price.

I did contact newegg, and sadly it's been about 42 days since I purchased the card- just over their one month return policy. They were kind enough to give me a 20$ customer-care gift card, and that helped-just-a-little over the loss.

Sorry about the pc specs! They're listed now, I was just a bit flustered and hit submit without thinking.

That actually doesn't sound like that bad of an idea, if the 980 really ends up being better. I did order through EVGA thankfully. Do you happen to know if the 980 is part of the program?

I do see it as an option. Considering I bought mine at (What was then considered) a sale, the difference would be 80$, plus shipping and tax.

Do you know if the performance difference would really be worth that?

It performs better than a 780ti and has an extra 4 gigs of VRAM which will help down the road if you SLI/play at higher resolutions. Another 980 would cost another $550 down the road though but should drop in price when Radeon responds to these cards with new cards of their own.

How much of an improvement are we talking about, 80$+ worth? and

Does the upgraded memory bus of the 780 series have any advantages over the 980? 364-bit versus 256-bit?

GTX 780 reason to SLi

I have the 27-inch 1080p Asus stereoscopic 3D screen and i7 Haswell 4770 and iChiLL GTX 780 and games such as Batman: AC or AA run at as low as 10fps in action scenes sometimes while in stereoscopic. Average is over 60. But even with the latest NVidia drivers etc... bios etc... chipset etc... too low.

So, I have had to put in a bid for another GTX 780; and wondered about the 980 etc.....

I still dont know if the 780 3Gb is the issue though. I have never seen anyone answer that (ref the 3D affecting VRAM requirements).

As for spending $80 seeming wrong; you could perhaps relate that to the US National Debt Unfunded Liabilities for perspective.

Maybe a used 760 for the PhysX would help.... but the complexity of options in regards to how that could affect frame-rates pozitively in (or out of) stereoscopic 3D is not well known even by most PC experts.

So; I completely understand the question.

I considered using my 780 for PhysX and getting one 980 for now.

Reliable Amazon sales-dealers still sell cards like the Asus GTX 780 for the equivalent of around $800 here in Japan. so learn to be grateful you get them for $500 or $380 or whatever it is.
