I installed my computer and booted to the BIOS screen fine. Everything was installed properly except I noticed that I could not get to Windows since I had forgot to plug the hard drive in. I shut off the power, plugged it in, but then when I went to boot the computer, it started for half a second and then failed. Any additional attempts to boot the computer fail whether you use the case switch or the mobo switch. Just to make sure, I even tried unplugging the harddrive again as that was the only cord I moved, but the computer still wont power on. If i unplug the power first it will always do the short half-second attempt to start before stopping.

So I basically have no idea what happened as literally all I did was plug in the harddrive and now the computer refuses to start. I'vs noticed that many people have had similar problems, but I've tried pretty much every potential solution and had no luck (unplugged and reinstalled all the parts, tested RAM, etc.). The mobo LED power light is still on, so I don't think my PSU just died in the 5 minute span i took to plug in the harddrive. Did my mobo or CPU just crap out in that short timespan? I'm so confused as to what would cause the PC to no longer even boot.

More about : wont boot previously working fine moments prior cpu fans start stop

The only thing u can do for now is to test the PC with another PSU and do the "Paperclip test on PSU".

Check everything on your PC, Check if the cables are plugged in the right way, check the modular interface on your PSU and check that all of the cables are plugged in. Same thing happen to my friend, but then we say that one the cables on the cables on the modular interface wasn't plugged in probably, LOL. Same with CPU Power the cable might not be plugged in the right way

two weeks ago i replaced my PSU:
-waited three days for brand new RMA PSU to arrive.
-tested it with a PSU tester. seemed fine.
-plugged a 6" extension for the 8-pin CPU cable into the MOBO and routed it behind MOBO.
-plugged the 8-pin and 24-pin modular cable(s) into the PSU.
-plugged 24-pin into the MOBO.
-but forgot to plug 8-pin cable from PSU into the 6" extension (routed behind the MOBO). LOL
-thought the brand new RMA PSU was DOA.
-went out and purchased the same PSU locally.
-tested with a PSU tester. seemed fine.
-and for a second time, forgot to plug 8-pin into the 6" extension (routed behind MOBO)! LOL
-decided it was impossible for a new RMAed PSU and a new locally purchased PSU to BOTH be DOA.
-plugged in an old Antec PSU directly into the MOBO and all worked fine.
-said, "wait a minuet..." RMA is not DOA. My brain IS. Because not once, but TWICE, i failed to plug the 8-pin CPU modular cable into the 6" extension (routed behind MOBO)! LOL
-i concluded it was all because the 24-pin cable; had a pig-tailed modular plug; that split and plugged-in twice; into the PSU. and i thought; with way way too quick observations; that one pig-tail plug was for the 24-pin cable and the other was for the 8-pin cable (with way way too quick observations). but NO, they were both for the 24-pin. besides... the 6" extension for the 8-pin CPU cable... WAS plugged into the MOBO. LOL (and routed behind the MOBO). this is the one and only, out of hundreds of PCs i've built, with all modular power cables that were also routed behind MOBO. lesson learned; the more u do something the greater the chance of doing something so super stupid that not even an amateur would likely do it. (i did it TWICE!) LOL

the funniest thing is the countless times it takes for ppl (me especially) to stop panicking whenever pressing the power button results in nothing; omg; only to discover the power chord to the PSU was unplugged. But then after 1st panic and after plugging in the power chord; how many times it takes for anyone (especially me) to stop panicking when, again, pressing the power button, results in nothing; omg only to discover that 2nd time was because the switch on the PSU, was in the open position. LOL

And even better.....powering up and nothing happens, you check the PSU - it is on....you check the power cord it is on. Finally after 30 minutes of banging your head, you realize the power strip isn't plugged in or the power strip's switch is set to off.....
