Will a Pci express 3.0 work on a Pci 1.0

A PCI-e 3.0 card will work in any PCI-e slot, even 1.0. And vice versa.

Assuming that the user has the latest drivers and Bios for all the hardware, its typically going to true that the cards will be compatible.

The only time it will definitely not be true is a PCIe 2.1 card in a 1.0 slot.

That's correct.

The other thing is that, assuming the Sony Vaio model you quoted is the one you plan on upgrading, that actually uses PCIe 1.1 slots, which 3.0 card will work in.

There is no reason to upgrade that PC, start over and call it good.

PCI 2.1 is the only non compatible version, however compatible dosent mean it wont be bottlenecked by the bandwidth of the lane.
