I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I just installed a steam client(Steam (steam-launcher)) from the software center.
When I first start the software, it shows up like so.

3Qbxv.jpg

However, it shut down when I choose "LOGIN TO AN EXISTING ACCOUNT"(the three options go with the same result).
Not only this application, some others such as garena+ also shut down when I click on something
I've tried to reinstall it from the web and software center

The following is what codes I got by launching it from terminal :

ng572@572Home:~$ steam

system settings ,software and updates ,aditional drivers tab.
if you installed a driver from nvidia it should say continue using driver or some message like that
select a open source driver and restart.
if this does not work i found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2209830
it tells you how to uninstall nvidia drivers at the botom of the thread.
and tells you what steps to folow for fixing your problem.
one other thing i would advise you to install the 32 bit librarys and if you type ctrl-alt-f1 you can press alt-f7 to return to the desktop if you get lost.
if you do not know how to navigate in the terminal do not do anything if you are not comfortable.
open a terminal and type uname -a you should see x86_64 GNU/Linux at...

Sorry but I get this by doing "sudo apt get update" (I skipped the password line) :

ng572@572Home:~$ sudo apt get update
E: Invalid operation get

Also the "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" :

ng572@572Home:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

And lastly the "Idconfig" :

ng572@572Home:~$ ldconfig
/sbin/ldconfig.real: Can't create temporary cache file /etc/ld.so.cache~: Permission denied

sorry sorry mistyped it
sudo apt-get update
and you need to run the other command with sudo
sudo ldconfig
you run sudo to be granted superuser access known as root .
because root is disabled by default in Ubuntu during the installation no root password was specified.only user password.
well you can bypass this and type sudo -i and use your password and you will see the terminal change to root.
although if you do not know what you are doing you can do some relay bad stuff to your system.a mistype and thing are gone.the terminal will not forgive.

no because its just a update and the last will take a while.
i hope you did not close the terminal.
if you did it should tell you to kill a process you don't want to do that.
you can just retype the command if you canceled it.
i will be offline some time (aproximately 4 hours paperwork) so i hope someone else will jump in and help i will be back.
and restart after the pc after ldconfig has finished.

I've been waiting for an hour, close the terminal and restart the computer, seems like everything is doing well.
But still.... I'm not able to run steam

I look forward to having another answer:)

ok i ran steam on mine it works fine(as it worked everyother time i ran it lol) although i noiticed this in your output.
/home/ng572/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 730: 13574 Segmentation fault
(core dumped) $STEAM_DEBUGGER "$STEAMROOT/$STEAMEXEPATH" "$@"
i found that a simple fix is to uninstall proprietory drivers and use open source drivers to run steam for the first time.
after that when steam works then go and install proprietory drivers.
post your build if it is easy for you.

for detailed information on how to install the nvidia driver you can find it form nvidia here http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/343.22/README/installdriver.html
and this is the proprietory driver for your gpu 64 bit http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/77844/en-us.
need more help i am here.

I changed my driver in "system settings -> software and updates -> aditional drivers tab"
and it really works! Everything works normally now and I'm able to play games! Thank you.
