XP 64 bits x Windows 8.1 64 bits for gaming

Hello there!

I'm currently running Windows XP 64 bits on this PC. Before installing it, i read a benchmark test on this site if I'm not mistaken, which showed WinXP with optimal results, even beating the newer versions on some tests.

The problem is that I play a game called League of Legends and my game starts fine (at 130 FPS), but then drops to 30-40 while the game is rendering some specific particles or too much is going on the screen (Dota 2, however, in the exact same conditions, doesn't lag at all).

So here's my question: knowing that WinXP only supports Directx9 and also doesn't support the Unreal Engine (next-gen gaming), knowing that I have Windows exclusively for gaming, should I keep XP or drop for Win 8.1? Is there a huge gap in performance? I wanna know this since the majority of the player base is migrating to Win 7/Win 8, so it's understandable for devs to optimize the game for those platforms especifically.

Solution
The dropping of XP did allow developers to stop having to develop for DX9, so it's absolutely likely that you'd see optimizations from it. Still, I can't really advise keeping any computer with an outward facing connection running XP. Anti-malware systems really don't have much incentive to try and catalog and protect against new exploits targeting it, and in the long run, that means you will be compromised. Issues with particles can be a large number of causes, though, so would you mind posting system specs?

Hey there, viewtyjoe!

I'm quite an advanced user, so I don't care much about the system's security; as I said, this SO is specifically for gaming, and I was wondering if there are huge improvements between DX9 vs DX11.1 (win8), why some particles are causing me to lag while some games run perfectly fine, this kind of information. Thanks.

Hey,

I was running the game with those exact same specs and it didn't lag (on win7 32 bits), so It's likely the game is lagging because of Windows XP. You've convinced me, I will install Win 8.1 64 bits and I really hope I see less FPS drops. Thanks :)
