Basically my secondary HDD randomly disappears while in the middle of using it. either videos or gaming from it anything. I have tried different sata cables, different power connector, cleaned out the entire computer from dust etc. disconnected any unused peripherals including the ODD, checked my power settings made sure the HDD set to sleep was on never.

I ran DD clone from a linux partition on it to another drive just encase the HDD was faulty and now showing up on the SMART data or the manufactures HDD checker tool. On the backup drive I cloned it to, it is doing the same thing, randomly disconnecting. No idea what is happening.

Additional details: the HDD was a WD blue 1TB, clone to a WD black 1TB. OS is windows 7 64 bit. checked all drivers were up to date and my UEFI version is 'Intel Corp. GAZ7711H.86A.0039.2012.0426.1522.

Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance to anyone that reads my problem.

Hi there statphantom,

I am sorry that you are having problems with your WD HDD. Have you tried the drive on another PC? You can do so and if the problem persists, you can be sure that the drive itself is causing the problem.
Regarding your other drive having the same symptoms after the cloning process, I guess that some kind of software error was transferred to it.
After you back up all your data, you can write zeros to the drive and see whether this will solve the problem. You can do so with the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool.

Hope this will help,

cant test directly inside another PC but using a USB interface it sees and runs fine. definitely not a software issue on the HDD as before I tried to clone it I did transfer just the files over to the 2nd HDD. effectively the same as backing up, hard formatting the drive, then putting the backup files back on the HDD. so I don't think its the HDD or anything on the HDD. for some reason I think its something with either the OS. my UEFI settings, or maybe PSU/MB damage. just unsure.

EDIT: Just had another weary thought, maybe there is a problem with the drive controller... ugh don't really want to spend another $350 on a new MB if that is the case.

You did not mention that the drive worked fine with USB in your first. I doubt that the cause for your issue is the OS given the fact that all your drivers are up to date. I would agree with you that the PSU or the motherboard might be the issue. The thing is that it might not be that easy to troubleshoot these two. Did you have more hard drives attached to your system before or now it is the first time? Eventually, you can borrow a PSU from somebody and try it on your system.
Regarding your motherboard hard drive controllers, I would just advise you to contact the tech support of your MB manufacturer.

Cheers,

Thanks, didn't mention the HDD worked fine in a USB cause i thought i gave enough information to show its not a HDD problem. guess I need to test a new powersupply then go ahead and get a new PSU or MB. I have had alternative drives attached to the computer about 6 months ago, randomly 1 of the drives had this exact same problem, but after I took them out and only used one at a time it worked fine, till now.

Thanks for your replies.
