I have just purchased an AMD Vapor-X R9 280x 3GB graphics card. Everything seemed to be working well at first, just until I decided to go the Sapphire website and download whatever wasn't in the Drivers CD, namely the Trixx OC Utility and the HydraVidion package. I installed both, and checked what the Trixx was about: I tried overclocking by 1, applied and all was well, but I didn't want to push it any further because my PSU isn't that powerful. Then I tweaked a bit the fans' speed, but again didn't make any major changes.

Upon restarting after all that, after the Windows loading screen, I couldn't see a thing - almost. I could see the mouse pointer, although it disappeared here and there, and just portions of the Windows home screen flashed briefly. I rebooted using the onboard VGA and deleted everything I installed before restarting, but the problem persisted.

Also, on the same session, I deleted my previous nVidia drivers (though I don't think it has anything to do with this). I would appreciate any help on how to solve this. I'm running on Windows 8.1.

Thanks in advance.

What brand/model PSU?

Most likely you have found the threshold of your PSU capacity.

550W, I don't even remember the brand. I knew there were odds that my PSU couldn't handle it, but it did well while gaming (Far Cry 3, AC: Black Flag, Skyrim HD, all on Ultra). Was the +1 Mhz that crossed the line or was it going to happen at some random point? Anyway, I guess I will try and find another PSU to try it with, if I can't find a better reason.

Thanks for your answer

EDIT: Also, is there a way to underclock it? I can't open Trixx in safe mode, which is the only way to go through Windows with the VGA installed.

Sounds like the PSU.

This one is inexpensive and will serve you well:

This is better overall, $65 with special offer and rebate:

Both have rebates.

You could underclock, but I would not mess with it. Your PSU could fail and cause more problems.

Thanks a lot! I think I should go for more watts though, 600 don't seem a big step from 550. I'll do some research at local stores (you posted the same link twice btw).

Bummer. I tried it with a 1200W Coolermaster PSU and the same thing happened. I'll try the card on a different PC to check if there is something wrong with it. Meanwhile, if anyone has another idea, please share.

It was a driver issue after all. I clean deleted all the previous drivers with Display Driver Uninstall and it worked.
