Hello, I am in the market for my very first NAS storage solution.
Having read posts on different forums I have decided to go for a custom build storage.
Here are the parts that I will be using:

Corsair 430W Builder Series £36
ASRock H81M-HDS Intel Socket 1150 Motherboard £36
Intel Celeron G1820 2.7GHz Socket 1150 Dual Core £26
Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel £38
Cooler Master N200 Mid Tower Micro-ATX Chassis £31
WD Red 3TB SATA III 3.5" HDD Drive x1 £87
Total = approx. £260

My main concerns with this build are space, heat and Power consumption. I will be adding a second HD later on as I am on a tight budget.
Now my question is that will this setup be better than an similarly priced QNAP/Synology/Buffalo in terms of streaming HD movies, downloading etc or I am better off getting the ready made solution ?
Please advice. Thanks

You don't include the cost of the OS if you intend to use Windows. You also don't account for the cost for your time. Your build has quite a bit more CPU and RAM than any two disk commercial NAS. But it will probably be underutilized. Unless you expect to run torrents continually or transcode a lot of media you don't need much processor. A two disk Synology chassis (DS214) with the same 3TB disk is about 300 pounds. Is it worth the extra cost to plug in a disk an go. That is the question you have to answer.

So are you suggesting that I should get and enclosure and get a HDD myself ? Main thing that is keeping me away from this option is the slow upload/download speed. I have heard horror stories about it taking weeks for pple to get their data uploaded to the NAS and not to mention the software issues.
Also if by transcoding you mean streaming then yes that will be the main purpose of the drive.

The Synology website has good benchmarks for their products. A single disk will generally write at 70 to 100 MB/s. What was your plan to populate data on the 3TB disk? Somehow the data has to be copied onto it. That copy time will be similar with your build or a commercial build. The similar copy time assumes you have a gigabit network.

Transcoding is the process of realtime conversion of a high res media file to a lower resolution for streaming to phones over low bandwidth link (3G, etc). Streaming to XBMC or Apple TV or Plex are all supported. Check the addon packages that are available.

What software issues have you heard about? I have had 3 Synology units and been very happy. Try the live demo of the Synology software.

What OS are you expecting to use on your build? You didn't identify that in your description. With your build you will be required to configure all the streaming software (VLC, Windows media player, etc)

I have a lot of HD movies that I want to stream directly to my TV. Movies are high bit rate and I have read that they might stutter if the NAS is not up to the task.
Also I been looking at synology 214se which is in my budget range I can add 4 Tb of storage to it and it will cost the same as my build but with less power consumption and smaller size. If u have any other model or make plz let me.know.

Check the product comparison on Synology's website to see how the 214se compares. Here is the review over at SmallNetBuilder. You might want to look at their NAS Ranker for other alternatives.
